These videos are very interesting to me. When I was in HS, I learned to serve underhand. Is that wrong or is overhand better? Do you hit the ball with an open or closed fist when you serve overhand? Please reply, I'm really curious.
Hi Kathy, The overhand serve is the end product. We first introduced the underhand serve and master that. The following lesson I teach the overhand serve. The reason that the overhand serve is better is because a skilled server can place the ball in several different spots on the court. Also a lot more velocity is created making it harder to return. Finally a skilled server can now skip the ball off the top of the net making it even more difficult to return. The proper technique is to strike the ball with an open hand making the majority of the contact with the heel of the hand. Hope this helps.
